Mixing it up with the Mixolydian! The bagpipe uses the Mixolydian mode scale mode which gives it its distinctive tunes! You can also mix it up dance-wise in this challenging 96 bar strathspey and reel medley which places a piper right in the middle of the square set starting in a St. Andrew's cross position! If you have highland dancers available, you can integrate them with country dancers! Dancers face each other doing a combination of highland steps and the Glasgow Highlanders setting step. Or for an all country dancer set, have all country dancers do the Glasgow Highlanders setting step. This dance contains an interesting figure which travels round the honoured piper in the center in a "star" configuration! Given the solo nature of the bagpipe and its natural volume, few attempts have been made to combine the bagpipes with classical orchestral instruments, mainly due to conflicts of balance and tuning. However, composer Graham Waterhouse created the Chieftain's Salute Op. 34a for Great Highland Bagpipe and String Orchestra in 2001. He noted: "A satisfactory balance was achieved in this piece by placing the piper at a distance from the orchestra." Wink, wink! 😜

Today, July 27 is Bagpipes Appreciation Day! And, it is Scotch Whisky Day! Coincidence?
Most of us are elated by the skirl o' the pipes and want to get up and dance, or charge into battle, or run for the pub.
