Today's Musings, History & Folklore

If you have canine, feline, bovine, or a more exotic pet in your household, they may be leaning towards mischievous behavior today! Curious cats of all breeds are particularly prone, but the massive Maine Coon can wreak some real havoc just by virtue of its massive size! The origins of the Maine Coon cat are shrouded in mystery and folklore, with several captivating theories. One popular tale suggests that these majestic cats are descendants of long-haired felines brought to North America by Viking explorers, who found their way into the gene pool of local cat populations. Another charming legend claims that Marie Antoinette, while attempting to flee to America during the French Revolution, sent her cherished long-haired cats ahead of her, where they mingled with local cats. Additionally, it is believed that seafaring traders and settlers brought long-haired cats aboard their ships to control rodents, and these cats later bred with native short-haired cats. Regardless of their exact origins, Maine Coons have evolved into a hardy, large, and affectionate breed, well-suited to the rugged climates of New England. Regardless, these "gentle giants" with their tufted ears, bushy tails, and luxurious fur, are highly sociable and known for their playful, dog-like personalities! If you would prefer a dog in cat-form, the Maine Coon cat may be just the pet!

Known as "Gentle Giants", some Maine Coons reach enormous sizes.  A Maine Coon named Stewie held the record for the world's longest domestic cat, measuring over 48 inches from nose to tail. Despite his impressive size, Stewie was known for his gentle and friendly nature, often visiting nursing homes as a therapy cat, bringing joy to the residents with his affectionate personality.

Many Maine Coon owners report that their cats exhibit behaviors more commonly associated with dogs. For instance, a Maine Coon named Max was known to play fetch, bringing back thrown toys and eagerly waiting for them to be tossed again. His owner described Max as "a dog in a cat's body," showcasing the breed's playful and sociable nature.

Unlike most cats, Maine Coons often have a fascination with water. A famous example is a Maine Coon named Nora, who would regularly join her owner in the shower, happily splashing around in the water. This unusual trait is believed to be a result of their water-resistant fur and their historical background of living in the rugged climates of New England.

Maine Coons are known for their vocalizations, often using a variety of chirps, trills, and meows to communicate with their owners. One owner recounted how their Maine Coon, Oliver, would "talk" to them every evening, providing a running commentary on his day. These cats are not only affectionate but also highly interactive, engaging in conversations with their human companions.

Skilled Hunters: Maine Coons have retained their hunting prowess over the years. A story tells of a Maine Coon named Leo who would regularly bring "gifts" to his owner, such as mice, birds, and even the occasional squirrel. Leo's owner praised his hunting skills, noting how Leo would proudly present his catches as tokens of affection.
