Farmer's Market Day

May 25

Other Scottish Country Dances for this Day

Today's Musings, History & Folklore

"Up at dawn, a sleepy yawn,
Off to market, hurry on!
First in line to grab the prize,
Freshest veggies for my eyes.

Dashing quick with bedhead hair,
Shoes mismatched—don’t really care.
Bump the rooster, scare the hens,
Gotta beat my market friends.

Carrots bright, and lettuce green,
Tomatoes red like I’ve never seen.
Laughing farmers, all amused,
As I claim the veggies I’ve perused.

Victory’s mine, I’m feeling grand,
With the best in hand-picked land.
Next week’s race, I’ll surely win,
Farmer’s market champ again!"

Scottish Country Dance may not be a competitive sport, but getting the best of the farmer's market might be! Your Scottish Country Dancing should stand you in good stead as you weave about the stalls, looking for the freshest produce. This dance was devised to explore various figures of eight and was inspired by the Vancouver Weekend Farmer’s Market, noting that you have to get there early to get the choice hydroponic lettuce! The madcap story choreography for this lively jig includes: 1st couple practically running over each other getting ready for the market (bars 1–4), travel to the market (bars 5–8), and wander among the stalls looking for the best prices, the best produce, and the beautiful lettuce (bars 9–24). They got there in time to get the last one, and celebrate with a circle round and back! Enjoy your salad days, dancers! 😀 🥬 🥬 🥗
